Who was the first British woman coastguard?

SUE NELSON

Orkney saw Britain’s first female coastguard appointed in 1978.

Several years would pass before any more women took on the role although by the early 2000’s over a quarter of coastguards were women.

In 2008, Sue Nelson was awarded an MBE in recognition of thirty years devoted to training and supporting other coastguards.
