Who was the first British woman lighthouse keeper?

When Peggy Braithwaite died in 1996, only eight of the seventy-two lights maintained by Trinity House around Britain’s coast still had lighthouse keepers.

Two years later and there were none as the final lighthouse was automated.

Peggy Braithwaite joined her father as assistant keeper of Walney light near Barrow, Lancashire and was appointed as a principal keeper in 1975.

She remained at Walney until her retirement.
